Admission & Selection

Applicants for Cape Girardeau Career and Technology Center’s Physical Therapist Assistant Program must have:

Completed and signed application form for health-related programs.  Application Deadline is May 1. 

Completed prerequisite courses (or equivalent to Mineral Area College Courses) listed below with a grade of “C” or higher: 

  • General Biology with lab (4-5 cr. hrs.) 
  • MedicalTerminology / Intro to Pathology (3 cr. hrs.) 
  • EnglishComposition I (3 cr. hrs.)
  • IntermediateAlgebra (or higher) (3 cr. hrs.) **Mineral Area College's MAT 1185 Fundamentals of Algebra meets this requirement.

Submitted an official high school or GED transcript and official transcripts of all college credit.

Completed TEAS (Test of Essential Academic Skills) with a minimum 55%  Adjusted Individual Total Score is required.

TESTING DEADLINE IS MAY 1.
Provide (3) professional references (names and addresses: i.e. boss, supervisor, manager, etc.)

Applicants for whom English is a second language must show English proficiency by scoring in the high level for reading and listening and in the good level for speaking and writing on the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language). 

Inquire with the PTA Program Director for waiver options. Each applicant who has completed ALL of the above requirements may interview.

Top qualified applicants will be called for an interview within a month of the May application deadline.

*Final acceptance is contingent upon a negative drug screening.  

Completed a minimum of 12 hours job shadowing experience in approved physical therapy setting.

Applicants will also be required to have a criminal background screening.

 Both screenings are at the expense of the student.

A positive criminal background check may result in denial of clinical sites, failure to progress through the program, or failure to obtain a license.
